Stockholm hit by riots

Swedish firemen douse the flames of a burning car, as emergency services clean up after three nights of rioting in Stockholm.

These cars are among thirty set alight on Tuesday night.

Hundreds of youths - largely in poor immigrant neighbourhoods - also attacked a police station and clashed with officers in what is Sweden's worst disorder in years.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt denounced the violence and appealed for calm.

He said in Sweden's democracy, laws apply equally to everyone and society would not be changed by those who use violence.

The riots in one of Europe's richest capitals have shocked a country that prides itself on a reputation for social justice, and fuelled a debate about how Sweden is coping with both youth unemployment and an influx of immigrants.
