"Les Touristes" Villeneuve-Loubet

I made this as a memory note on the French Riviera, to remind me of a brasserie we passed in Villeneuve-Loubet called "Les Touristes." There we were, a couple of tourists, driving on a main commercial route beside train tracks in the Alpes-Maritimes département of France.

I was fascinated by what I named "the ziggurats," some posh apartments with their own marina on the Mediterranean. Their name refers to Nice, but this is only near Nice and not there at all.

The beach is beautiful just a hundred meters or so away, but on this strip, it was just concrete, kind of a strip. I'm American-born, married to a Parisian man, and am French now. But I always feel as though I'm a "perpetual tourist" in my new country. The feeling never really goes away, even though I now prefer France to the United States and barely know my country of origin anymore, having only been there three times in the past 19 years.

This clip was made in May, 2013. We rented a house on the sea in Roquebrune Cap-Martin for a week, then a furnished flat up in the Medieval village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup for a week. On the way South, we stayed for one night in Tournon, and on the way back to Paris, we stayed for one night in Tournus (in fact, that was our second stay there).

I wonder what it would be like to live here in this famous region of the world?
