This quite well constructed documentary on the state of Ireland in and around the summer of 1969 is compulsive viewing from the perspective of December 2011.
There is no reference to the looming problem of Northern Ireland which would burst on to the front pages of the world towards the end of the deceptively calm period shown.
This was broadcast a few years ago by TG4, Ireland's Irish language television service, with
a commentary by Niall Tóibín, the well known actor and broadcaster. His commentary is in
Irish with subtitles in English.
Well worth the thirty minutes or so it takes to watch it to the end - especially as the quite up
to date adverts contrast so sharply with the Ireland of the late sixties.
So much has changed for Ireland and for everyone else since that distant and deceptive
summer...
Seo clár de chuid TG4 ina bhfuil cur síos ar Éirinn sa bhliain 1969, roinnt éigin ama sar ar
phléasc Tuaisceart na hÉireann ina chogadh dearg a lean ar aghaidh geall le tríocha bliain.
Dúil suime dúinn anois an scannán seo. Cloistear Seán Mac Réamoinn ag cur síos ar an tír
agus ar na daoine féin thiar agus thoir, ffaoin dtuath agus i mBaile Átha Cliath.
Is dúil suime é na fógraí nua aimseartha a chur i gcomparáid le saol ár muintire na blianta
fada údaí ó shin.
