The health category was among the largest of all the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, with a per-capita expenditure in healthcare of EUR3,896.2 (US$5,009) in 2012. An increase in total healthcare expenditure and the introduction of national healthcare reforms in 2006 drove growth in the segment at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.0% during the review period (2008-2012). The segment’s gross written premium value reached EUR44.7 billion (US$57.5 billion) in 2012, of which health insurance accounted for 89.3%.
