A U.S. judge overturned Michigan state's ban on same-sex marriage after a challenge by Jayne Rowse and April Deboer who'd been barred from adopting each other's children.

"I'm overwhelmed. We're going to be a legalised family, a recognised family, by everybody."
(SOUNDBITE)(English) APRIL DEBOER, PLAINTIFF, SAYING:
"This is what we've wanted for our family and families like ours and we're just so happy and proud that Michigan is now on the right side of history and that we were able to stand up and say that wasn't fair."
Friday's ruling after a nine-day trial was in line with similar recent rulings in other states including Utah.
Federal judges have found bans on gay marriage to be unconstitutional in those states.
The rulings have all been put on hold pending appeals.
