Surprise Me!

Joshua Dinkin - Leave Me Be

Love is a rising sun,
Gleaming on golden sand,
And death is a smoking gun,
A cold and blood-soaked hand,
And on the edge of oblivion
We fearful creatures stand,
Playing games for fun,
As the sun sets o’er the land.

Tomorrow we bring bread,
And fruits from far and wide,
To honor all the dead,
And those who have not died—
We feast, then go to bed,
And from the beast we hide,
Hanging by a thread,
Swaying side to side.

Wedding bells are ringing!
A joyous day has come!
A choir of angels is singing!
A child sucks its thumb!
And generous ones are bringing
Seasoned meat and rum,
Then back to the beginning
We saunter, drunk and dumb.

This life is filled with wonder,
This life is rife with pain,
Some nights have lightning, thunder,
Some nights have light, soft rain,
Some days we stumble, blunder,
Some days we harvest grain,
When wheat from chaff we sunder,
So that we may sustain.

Another ship is sailing
Across the brazen sea,
A vessel meant for whaling,
And new discovery—
But it was unavailing,
Lost to catastrophe,
And now I’m done regaling,
And plead you leave me be.
