The train pulled away from the station,
it’s chiming sound fading in a distance.
She stood on the platform wiping her tears,
holding back her innermost fears.
His duty had him called,
the news had given her jolt.
Their married days had been few,
the memory of it still fresh and new.
He was a man with pride,
to his nation and honour he was tied.
She knew she had to be strong,
her reverie was broken by the church’s bong.
She stepped onto the cobbled street,
there were war victims to treat.
She made her way to church’s yard,
the recent bombing left it looking marred.
Tirelessly she looked after the wounded,
as each day, number of casualties mounted.
Her own fears were beginning to grow,
where was he, how was she to know?
She prayed for his safety day and night,
his face so vivid in her sight.
She closed her eyes and had a vision,
he was hurt by a shell’s fission.
Appeared unto her, his wraith,
‘with me’ he said ‘take a leap of faith.’
‘My love will give you the strength to carry on,
I will be with you through our son to be born.’
