I remember how his eyes hypnotized me,
When upon them I first gazed;
They awakened and stirred my sleeping heart,
For their beauty, heaven be praised!
His eyes could caress me from a distance,
But then come so close in the night;
They were bathed in warmth and gentleness,
In my darkness, they offered their light
I would get lost looking into those eyes,
Like sleepwalking into a dream;
Deeper and deeper, they were pulling me in,
Like a whirlpool in some enchanted stream
But I felt the need to escape those eyes,
They held me, like the cote holds the dove;
I gasped for air, I struggled to get free,
I could not be a slave to his love
I resisted those eyes and the spell they wove,
I struggled and fought with every breath;
Like a hornet, I stung the very soul of love,
But in my folly, I stung myself to death
Slowly, the eyes that loved me went dark,
I could no longer feel their caress;
And no kindly angel took pity on me,
No comfort in the imminent distress
The gentle eyes that taught me to love
Walked away from me, never to return;
O, greenish-brown eyes, like an autumn leaf,
Forever in my heart they will burn
