Surprise Me!

Dilantha Gunawardana - Romance Is Dead

I weep for it's your demise I see
No more poetry at a lover's mercy
Roses stagnate at florists corners
Surprises a lost forgotten art for donors
Words merely pleasantries or the news
No more renaissance artists or any muse
As couples stagnate through the monotony of life
Diversity hibernates in forgotten corners in strife
Love stories can be counted from the fingers on the hand
No Sandra Bullock or Keanu Reeves on the TV news stand
No Hugh Grant mumbling through weddings or a funeral
Nor Andie Mcdowell to fill the voids of the mural
Is this the world our children will inherit
No novelty in thought nor words of merit
I would cast a spell for a romantic renaissance
For a revolution of gestures sprinkled with romance
A spontaneous poem or a note on a birthday
Her favorite colors on the walls of her special day
Dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant buffet rounds
Amidst the Rastafarian reggae sounds
Off for a jazz session to serenade my love
For her to smile and move her temple to music's trove
Artists loitering on streets with their works
Street musicians captivating the crowds in their quirks
Jugglers reveling in their delicate trade
Confectionary stands in every nook to fleetingly wade
This would be the reemergence of romance
For believers to rejuvenate from their somber trance
Now I wake up it's the same old world
At least in my dreams romance is in a kaleidoscope twirl
Waking up the beauty that's all around
For romance to blossom in each and every sound
Words will always be at the center of romance
For expression is love's true quintessence
