‘Goodnight my love
Such a night it is
But now I leave in sorrow
For leaving you breaks my heart’
He repeats every night when he leaves her side
‘I know it does, my love’
She thinks, wishing she could wake from her slumber
‘Goodnight and dream well.
Dream of beautiful things
Such as diamonds and jewels
Dream that you will one day recover’
He says just before he closes the door
‘I will, my love’
She thinks, wanting to touch his face
‘Good morning my darling
I cannot stay long
But I must say hello
And it’s ok to let go’
He whispered to her, as a tear ran down his cheek
‘I do not wish to leave you, my love’
She thought as he closed the door behind him
Then as he drove off in his car
She awoke from her slumber
Called for a nurse
Then said
‘Tell him, I love him’
Then fell deep into the eternal sleep
The nurse called the man
Told him the news
And all he said was
I will kill that drunken man
Who put my love to sleep forever…
