Today I read a poem on prayer —
it could have been uplifting
but for a flashing slogan where
despite myself my eyes kept drifting.
For now on every poem’s screen
alongside lyrics, odes and such
commercial banners can be seen —
it’s getting all a bit too much!
This one insisted that I press
a flashing button labelled “fart” —
who dreams these up I cannot guess,
some nerd no doubt who thinks he’s smart.
Intrusive too is the latest fad
that highlights words in every verse
so each one links to a pop-up ad;
such advertising is a curse!
If ads are given pride of place
by those who manage Poem Hunter,
they’ll take up all the poems’ space
and the site will lose its every punter.
