Some birds are musical
there is no doubt.
About a certain woodland creature
there could be whimsical doubt.
................................Once upon a
time hiking
the day was
................................dreary
and I was
................................weary
in the wilderness
where the Shawnee and Cherokee roamed
there broke across my stride
a tap, tap,
................................tapping
from a nearby wooded instrument
drumming with a certain timbre
................................of a pine tree,
clearly measured, sharply honed,
in staccato style with rests in between
Did the Indians learn its say
hearing the tapping along their way
tapping messages through the forest trees
drumming the beat of their dancing feet?
The breezes still sing within the woods
whistling tunes by hollowed trunks
................................of every elephant tree,
waterfalls and streams scrambling notes
................................with all the rest,
crickets and frogs and other creatures
lending chorus to the woodsy musicality.
Enter the solo of the woodpecker
pecking out its typewriter song
sprinkling wood chips ringing bluebells.
Some birds are musical
no one can deny.
About a certain woodland creature
is up to you to decide..
