Mariachi musicians marched through the streets of Mexico City Saturday to honour the patron saint of music.

Outfitted in traditional cropped jackets and wide sombreros, the group included guitarists and violinists.

Some carried a statue of Saint Cecilia who in the Catholic faith was an early Roman martyr.

One musician offered thanks for having such an joyful profession.

Mariachi groups originated in the 19th century in the western state of Jalisco where they performed at festivals and weddings.

Modern day mariachi bands typically use guitars, violins, and trumpets and perform at any celebratory occasion.
