In a move to defuse violent opposition protests and attempts to destabilize the country, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa has temporary withdrawn two tax bills, calling instead for a national debate on the measures. The inheritance tax, aimed at the 2% of wealthy Ecuadoran, and the capital gains tax, designed to curb real estate and land speculation on properties that have benefited from their proximity to public infrastructure projects, were up for consideration in the National Assembly. Correa said the debate would be postponed until after Opoe Francis' visit in July. The national discussion will not be limited to the fiscal proposals, but include the debate on what type of society should be built. Nevertheless, the opposition is moving ahead with its plans for nationwide demonstrations in 35 cities on Wednesday to protest the tax measures. Luiz Scherffius reports from Quito. teleSUR
