New evidence has surfaced that calls into question the Mexican government's account of what transpired the night of September 26, when 43 students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers Training College were forcibly disappeared. Guerrero state judge Ulises Bernabé García, who has since fled to the United States and applied for political asylum alleging military threats on his life, told the weekly political affairs magazine Proceso that contrary to the official version of the events, the Ayotzinapa students were never turned over to the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel, and that army officials and federal police officers and not local police were patrolling the town when the events took place, thus raising the possibility of their participation in the repression of the students. teleSUR
