When I train students in safe sparring, it’s about making them feel a little pain but not too much pain. There will be bumps and bruises, there might be a few scratches, you might have a bloody lip, but there shouldn’t be any serious injuries that require medical attention. I know which parts of the body can take some damage and which parts of the body cannot. If you are to become proficient in safe sparring, one of the basics is that you should be able to take some hits to the stomach and go on. In this video Shen got the wind knocked out of him, it put him down for a minute or two but he recovered enough to continue. It is best that it happens during safe sparring so that you are kept safe, rather than happening on the streets where your opponent is not going to stop to make sure you are ok. These are the types of things you need to train your body to resist when danger comes its way.
If you have never been punched or kicked before, if you have never been slapped before, you will never be prepared for unarmed fighting situations that happen on the streets, safe sparring is designed to give you a realistic feeling of a real fight while protecting your safety at the same time. It’s likened to paintball gun fighting. Although the paintball is not a real bullet, it doesn’t mean that it won’t hurt when you get hit! And you better wear safety eyeglasses because the impact can blind you. If you get shot up close, you will bruise, you might even bleed. And don’t expect to survive a real gunfight if you don’t even have the tactical skills to prevent yourself from getting shot by a paintball. If I can slap you in the face during safe sparring, don’t think that in a real fight on the streets you have what it takes to not get punched in the face with a closed fist.
