Trails of the Elk begins in spring on the calving grounds where elk calves must learn about predators. Remaining motionless is a test of a nerve when a grizzly prowls the willows close by.
The trail divides as the elk move upward to summer ranges and bulls and cows go separate direction. During this time antlers grow and harden in preparation for the fall breeding season.
The bugling bulls return to the cows during the fall rut. Mud wallows are the elk's community centers. At these hidden locations, rarely seen elk behavior occur between competing bulls. Bugling and intimidation lead to antler breaking collisions.
The trail ends on winter range, where the elk's inherited stamina engages nature's forces.
