Derealisation disorder is one someone has an inability to focus, and stay in the present reality. In other words, they tend to zone out. For instance, you could be talking to them and they are looking at you and talking to you but they dissociated, they have gone somewhere else inside their minds. And they may not know what you are talking about or they may not be able to deal with the reality of the situation when you ask them a question.

There are many reasons why derealization disorder may happen, it may be because somebody experience trauma when they were younger or series of traumas and they have learned to dissociate as a protective mechanism when they are having contact with other people. They may not know that consciously but unconsciously it might be an automatic program. Also, some people may have brain damage, and in brain damage, you can see derealisation disorder where people are gone when you are talking to halfway through the sentence... there somewhere else. Or it may be the lack of enzymes and amino acids in the brain. The brain with the body is not quite functioning in a coordinated way -- so it is a stop-stop mechanism and they are not able to keep the thread of thought that a normal consciousness allows. Now, I am not talking about procrastination here, although, people with derealisation disorder do experience procrastination times. I am talking specifically to people who constantly zone out. That is difficult because they are unable to operate within their own lives.
