HOUSTON, TEXAS — What would be your first choice for a romantic spot to propose to your girlfriend? In front of the Eiffel Tower? On a beach in Bali? Or how about on the Gulf Freeway in Houston, Texas?
That was a choice made by Houston man Vidal Valladares Navas, who on Sunday enlisted the help of friends and blocked traffic along I-45, a major Houston freeway. He asked his girlfriend to exit the car with him, got down on one knee and proposed as his friends filmed.
Drivers that Sunday afternoon were furious. Some had assumed a horrible accident had occurred ahead, while one vehicle reportedly contained a pregnant woman who was being taken to the hospital to have a baby.
Navas, 24, and his now-fiancée Michelle Wycoff, 23, apologized profusely during an ABC 13 News television interview saying they had no intention of causing so much trouble. But despite their apologies, neither the Internet nor the authorities are cutting these thoughtless lovebirds any slack.
The online the reaction has been merciless, with every conceivable horrible comment one can imagine hurled at the couple. Houston Police offered their congratulations, but then charged Navas with obstructing a freeway, which is a Class B misdemeanor.
