NEW YORK — A new Calvin Klein underwear ad featuring Danish actress Klara Kristin has sparked a fury online for its oversexualization of young girls. The ad features an "upskirt" angle of the actress, displaying her spotted underwear, thighs, and buttocks.
Though Klara Kristin is 22 years of age, critics are condemning the spot for depicting a young girl in an overtly sexual pose that comes off as both misogynistic and creepy. Not only that, but some are going as far as to suggest that the ad borders on paedophelia, and panders to the carnal desires of disturbed old men.
A previous ad featuring Kristin in CK's spring campaign caught a ton of flak for the same reasons, after it was placed on a billboard in New York's Soho neighborhood, juxtaposed with an add of rapper Fetty Wap's head – a stark contrast between the projection of the sexes. A petition by rival women's underwear outfitter ThirdLove quickly mounted to have the billboard taken down, under the hashtag #MoreThanMyUnderwear. In mid-March of 2016, the offended parties got their way, and the billboard was removed.
In light of this most recent ad by Calvin Klein, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation has now begun a new petition for its eradication, along with an apology from the company.
