resident in the family house, all contending for scarce resources,

Fuji.
Chief Fuji has his own system of managing his vast community and
checking excesses. The threat of adding on wives or the sudden
appearance of "new children" does the trick...most of the time. A well
timed and publicized gift to his favorite wife Peace, usually sparks
commotion especially to cover his "escape".
