Who hasn’t always wanted a robot butler to tidy up around the hose, do our laundry and cook up a hot meal every now and then? Well, we’re all in luck, because researchers are developing a domestic robot that irons clothes.
The 5-foot-9 “TEO” robot comes equipped with a camera to create hi-resolution 3D-renderings of clothing. It then applies a wrinkle-detecting algorithm to the image in order to find and iron out the areas in need of a little extra attention.
The 176-pound humanoid contraption was developed by a team at Madrid’s Carlos III University. It was originally taught to climb stairs and open doors, but now the researchers want to teach “TEO” more chores.
Ultimately, “TEO” will one day be able to learn new capabilities by simply watching humans or other robots perform the tasks in the real world. You know, like in “The Jetsons.”
