"Seraphim". On 21th July 1862, the Vorstadt-Zeitung invited the public to a military fair in the Neue Welt amusement park in Heitzing. The combined orchestras of the three infantry regiments quartered in Vienna played the popular tone poem "Schlacht bei Vittoria" by Ludwig van Beethoven. However, concert music was also provided by the Strauss orchestra in the evening hours. For this event Josef Strauss composed a new French Polka titled Seraphinen. Max Schönherr associated the title with the six-winged angel. The subdued instrumentation suggests this as well: flutes and harp ensure a bright orchestral sound and the plucking of the strings in the first movement of the trio sustains the ethereal trumpet, flutes and harp. This work did not remain very long on the Strauss orchestra's Programme. On 13th October 1862 the music appeared at Haslinger publishers since some repeat performances were scheduled, the Polka the disappeared into the archives.
