"We have not seen any cases, human cases, of cholera since the start of the invasion of Ukraine" says Dr. Teresa Zakaria, WHO technical officer for emergencies response, adding that "environmental samples do show that the pathogen exists... so at any given moment, indeed, we could start finding cases".
Speaking during a WHO press briefing, Zakaria explains that, in the aftermath of the Kakhovka dam collapse, "epidemiological surveillance for waterborne diseases is heightened and supplies are being mobilised" and that the organisation has "been working very closely with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to make sure that mechanisms are in place."
