Shaftesbury Dance Orchestra - Susquehanna Home

I hadn't the faintest idea which orchestra this might be, but it turns out to be one of the many pseudonyms (in this case a British one) of Ben Selvin. This is another request. Originally a violinist, Ben Selvin (to whom the pseudonym Shaftesbury Dance Orchestra referred) probably made more records than any other bandleader from the late 1910's through the 1930's. After his recording career he remained active in record business as artistic director till the 1960's. The tune presented here is just as obscure as the band's pseudonym, and I wonder why it was so seldom recorded, since it is fantastic. You'll be able to appreciate for yourself this witty, greatly instrumentated tune. It was acoustically recorded in 1924, and sound is remarkably good.
