In a disturbing incident from Dombivli (Kalyan, Maharashtra), a woman carrying her 9-month-old baby was allegedly dragged by her hair and beaten with sticks by neighbours for saying “Excuse me” in English instead of Marathi.

The incident occurred on April 7, when Poonam Gupta and her friend Jyoti Chavan were riding a scooter. Poonam reportedly said “Excuse me” to make way through a narrow lane. This reportedly angered the Dhoble family, who insisted she speak in Marathi and then launched a violent assault on both women.

Jyoti Chavan, who was holding her infant during the attack, was also beaten. Poonam's husband, Ankit Gupta, was allegedly attacked when he tried to intervene.

Initially, the Vishnu Nagar Police only registered a non-cognizable cross-complaint, citing injuries on both sides. However, after a video of the assault surfaced and went viral, Poonam was called in to record a fresh statement.
