Americans could be heading toward the biggest tax refund season in history in 2026 — with refunds possibly nearing four thousand dollars on average
But this is not free money
After a sweeping tax law signed by Donald Trump rewrote parts of the tax code for 2025 the IRS never updated paycheck withholding tables
That means millions of workers had too much tax taken out all year

Investment bank Piper Sandler predicts refunds could rise by about one thousand dollars
But experts warn this is not a financial windfall
It is simply your own money coming back
Middle and upper income households are expected to benefit the most
While some lower income Americans may lose support elsewhere
