Taiwan’s first National Archives serve as a time capsule of the country’s history. “For many democratic countries, the establishment of an archive symbolizes a vital index of democratization,” said Lin Chiu-yen, the director general of the National Archives Administration in New Taipei.
For years, archivists at National Archives have treated and studied historical documents, including the original copy of the order to lift martial law in Taiwan. This document, signed and issued in 1987, ended one of the longest periods of military rule in the world.
Unlike an ordinary museum, the National Archives is managed by the National Archives Administration, which for the past 25 years has been responsible for building management systems to collect and preserve historical records.
