The specifications of the Protecteur-class JSS highlight its versatility and robustness. At 173.7 meters long with a beam of 24 meters and a draught of 7.4 meters, the ship displaces up to 21,614 tonnes when fully loaded, making it a substantial presence on the water. Powered by two MAN 12V32/44CR propulsion engines driving twin shafts, along with a bow thruster for precise maneuvering, it can achieve speeds of up to 20 knots and cruise over 10,895 nautical miles at 15 knots. The design, adapted from Germany's Berlin-class replenishment ships, incorporates double hulls for safe fuel storage and features advanced systems like the CMS 330 combat management system from Lockheed Martin Canada and Sea Giraffe AMB radar for situational awareness. Cargo-wise, it's a floating warehouse: capable of carrying up to 10,000 tonnes of ship fuel, 1,300 tonnes of aviation fuel, and 1,100 tonnes of ammunition, plus space for vehicles, containers, and specialized equipment. Aviation facilities include a hangar and flight deck for up to four helicopters, including large models like the CH-147 Chinook, with two landing spots. Onboard, there's even a modular hospital with surgical capabilities, dental facilities, and beds for 45 general patients plus four intensive care units, underscoring its role in humanitarian missions.
