President Prabowo Subianto outlined the potential serious impacts on Indonesia if a Third World War were to occur. He emphasized that Indonesia would still be affected even if not directly involved in such a global conflict.

"My brothers and sisters, there are simulations showing that if a third world war, a nuclear war, happens, even we who are not involved will definitely be hit," Prabowo stated while delivering a briefing at the 2026 Rakornas Pemerintah Pusat dan Daerah in Sentul, Bogor, West Java, on Monday (2/2/2026).

According to Prabowo, one of the worst effects of a nuclear war would be a nuclear winter, which could block sunlight for a long period. This condition, he said, has the potential to pollute the environment and food sources, including Indonesia's marine products.

"We will be hit by radioactive particles. Perhaps all our fish will become contaminated. A nuclear winter will occur because the dust will cover the sun, and it won't be for one year, not 2 years, not 3 years. Experts say the winter could last for decades. This is what is being discussed globally," Prabowo explained.

He added that this scenario is a serious concern for the international community, including Indonesia, given its global impact which knows no national borders.

Within that context, Prabowo reaffirmed his commitment to continue implementing Indonesia's foreign policy in accordance with the mandate of the nation's founders: bebas aktif (independent and active) and not aligning with any power bloc.

"Therefore, as a mandate-holder continuing the legacy of our nation's founders, I am carrying out a foreign policy that adheres to our consistent line of being independent and active, yet non-aligned, non-block," he said.
