In July 1943, thirty-one-year-old Filipino nurse Consuelo Reyes undertook a perilous mission during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Carrying a bag of medicine, she walked 200 miles barefoot through jungle terrain for nineteen days, hiding from enemy checkpoints, sleeping in caves, and surviving on roots and insects. Her goal was to save 94 children in a remote mountain village dying of typhoid fever. Known among resistance fighters as “the nurse who goes anywhere,” Consuelo had already been treating wounded fighters in hidden camps. When no one else dared to attempt the journey, she volunteered, declaring, “Then I will not be caught.” Her courage and sacrifice embodied resilience, compassion, and defiance in the face of certain death.
