Deaths linked to a synthetic opioid hundreds of times stronger than heroin may have been underestimated by as much as a third across the UK, according to new research. Nitazenes are a class of extremely potent synthetic opioids, in some cases up to five hundred times stronger than heroin. Originally developed as painkillers in the nineteen fifties, their production was halted due to their extreme potency and high risk of addiction.
