Paper Bubble — Scenery 1969 (UK, Folk, Pop Rock)
The trio from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, consisted of guitarists and vocalists Terry Brake and Brian Crane, and bassist Neil Mitchell. Somehow, they caught the attention of future Strawbs members Dave Cousins and Tony Hopper, who helped them secure a contract with Deram Records. Unfortunately, the lack of interest in their only album, recorded in 1969, was likely due to the fact that it was produced by the same incompetent Cousins and Hopper. This is truly unfortunate, as the album was much better than the few negative reviews suggested, and is a pleasant, albeit fairly traditional, folk and folk-rock album (though with elements of psychedelia and early progressive rock). Paper Bubble deserved more than their meager share of the success of this obscure release. It's also worth noting that the album featured drummer Richard Hudson, bassist John Ford, and keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who would join the band Strawbs six months later. The band lasted until late 1971, when they recorded a second album, never released on vinyl. The musicians occasionally reunited in the 1970s, opening for Strawbs, Thin Lizzy, and Pentangle, but never fully reunited.
