Magic of Olympic cauldron becomes nightly ritual in Milan
Mounted underneath Milan's 19th-century Arco della Pace, the Olympic cauldron has proved to be a major night-time attraction for locals and tourists as they celebrate the Winter Games. A three to four-minute light display springs into life every hour between 1800 and 2300 local time (1800-2200GMT), enchanting hundreds of people who gather to enjoy the experience of hosting the sporting extravaganza in northern Italy. And in between, the Olympic flame itself continues to burn, as it also does at a twin installation in the mountain hub of Cortina d'Ampezzo. According to the Milano-Cortina organizers, the aeronautical aluminum design of the cauldron leans on the works of Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci and pays tribute to "geometric interlacing symbolizing the harmony between nature and human ingenuity."
