‘Superheroes’ share Iftar joy with children in Indonesian city
Indonesia's street performers dressed as superheroes distributed iftar snacks to passing motorists and pedestrians on Tuesday, March 3, in Bandung, West Java, as part of the country’s Ramadan festivities.
Hendayana Rusman, 46, has worked as a freelance clown since 2016. But each Ramadan, he shifts from performing to distributing 'takjil,' the small snacks and sweet drinks Indonesians consume at iftar, the evening meal that ends the day's fasting. With friends from his neighborhood community, Rusman said he gives out hundreds of portions every year to ease the trip home for people stuck in traffic. Families and commuters say the free snacks help soften the strain of long rides through heavy congestion.
Amid global tensions, Rusman said the spirit of Ramadan should remind leaders to pursue peace. He hopes other entertainer groups will join similar charity drives, adding he does not seek fame — only to be remembered for giving back. As dusk falls over Bandung, he hands out the last packets — a small gesture, he says, to make Ramadan a little easier for others.
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is the time when Muslims refrain from drinking and eating from dusk to dawn, and are encouraged to practice their faith.
