Ozempic safe as weight loss drug but not for everyone — expert
A health expert on Tuesday says that Ozempic, a medication primarily used to treat diabetes, can be safely used for weight loss but only for individuals who are overweight or obese and under medical supervision. During the '8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity: Stronger Heart, Healthier Kidneys, Better Diabetes Control' event in Manila on March 10, 2026, Dr. Elaine Cunanan, vice president of the Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Inc. (PCEDM), said that semaglutide—the generic name of Ozempic—has been proven effective in helping individuals lose weight, even those without diabetes. She noted, however, that despite its effectiveness, it should not be taken without medical supervision.
