PART 7: The Old Map Changed Everything

When I arrived at the county survey office, the technician already had two maps spread across the table.

On one side was the developer’s modern survey.

Clean lines. Fresh measurements. The same boundary the HOA had been using to justify the resort project.

On the other side was the older county parcel map.

Yellowed paper.

Handwritten notes along the edges.

At first the difference looked small.

Just a few feet between the two lines.

But the technician leaned forward and pointed to a narrow strip running across the ridge.

“See this?” he said.

That thin strip followed the exact place where my oak trees had been standing.

But the label next to it was partially faded in the digital system.

“This boundary has been in the county records for decades,” the technician explained.

“But the description attached to it isn’t showing in the database.”

In other words…

The line existed.

But the document explaining it hadn’t been opened yet.

The technician searched the system again, then leaned back in his chair.

“There’s only one place the original record would still be stored,” he said.

“The county archive vault.”

That’s where the really old records live.

Hand-drawn surveys.

Original land agreements.

Documents from long before everything was scanned into computers.

The technician looked at the ridge line on the map again.

“If the original document explains what this boundary actually is…”

He paused for a moment.

“Then the developer’s survey could be ignoring something important.”

And if that happened to be true…

The HOA hadn’t just made a small mistake.

They had built their entire resort project on land they might not legally be allowed to use.
