RSPB Dearne Valley, Barnsley has helped to regenerate the local landscape, which for years served the mining industry as a coal depot. This vital second chance has allowed birds and wildlife to flourish in an area recovering from industrial decline. The response from local people has been overwhelming, with 100,000 people coming through the doors in 2009. Adults with learning disabilities and teenagers who are not in education or employment visit regularly to help with the upkeep of the reserve, providing them with new skills and experience of working in an environmental and visitor setting.
