A disturbing case of alleged bullying and public humiliation has surfaced from Shahjahanpur, where an elderly man was stopped on the road, assaulted, and forced to perform the humiliating “murga” punishment by a group of youths. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The incident reportedly occurred in Nahil village under the jurisdiction of Puwaiyan Police Station.
According to reports, the victim, Lalu Gupta, was surrounded by several young men on a village road. The viral video allegedly shows the youths abusing him, forcing him to squat in the “murga” position, and making him place his head at their feet while apologising.
The accused were also heard threatening the elderly man, warning him that he would be punished again if he continued to support the opposing group in the village.
Reports suggest the incident is linked to an earlier dispute between two groups in the village. On March 5, one party filed an FIR alleging derogatory remarks were made against the Brahmin community, following which police detained two individuals.
It is alleged that Lalu Gupta later took food to those detained at the police station, which angered members of the rival group and triggered the confrontation.
On Friday, while Gupta was passing through the village, the accused reportedly stopped him, abused him, and then assaulted and humiliated him in the street.
After the video surfaced online, police took cognisance of the matter. Rajesh Dwivedi said the incident has come to the notice of the authorities and the local police station has been directed to investigate.
Police said strict legal action will be taken against the accused once the complaint is formally registered and the facts are verified.
