In this eye-opening clip, a cybersecurity expert breaks down why your "beach dump" on Instagram is actually a massive security liability. While most people worry about physical burglaries, the real danger in 2026 lies in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and highly targeted social engineering.
The OSINT Trap
Scammers are no longer just looking for empty houses; they are looking for your location to impersonate you. If a bad actor sees you’ve checked into a specific resort in the Bahamas, they can use that information to call the hotel, pose as you, and manipulate staff to gain access to your credit card details or personal itinerary.
The "Dead Air" Scam
Perhaps the most terrifying tactic discussed is the use of timed scam calls. Hackers wait until you are mid-flight—knowing your phone is off or in airplane mode—to call your family members. By posing as you in an "emergency," they ensure your loved ones can't reach you to verify the story, creating a window of panic where they can extract thousands of dollars. This is a chilling look at how digital footprints are being weaponized in real-time.

Transcript: You know as a cybersecurity expert, you also never post vacation photos while you're still away. Besides the actual physical threat, like everyone's like, Oh, people know that you're away from your house, they're going to burglarize it, which is still accurate. Scammers now are getting even more specific on what they can do. There's a lot of it's called Open Source Intelligence. Anything you do online is really easy to find if you're public. And so for Open Source Intelligence, if they see you and they say, Oh, you're at a Marriott hotel in the Bahamas, okay, I'm going to call the Marriott hotel, pretend I'm you and try to get more information. Maybe get your credit card, do whatever, just cause a mess. So there's a lot of social engineering from that perspective. And also scammers have gotten really, really smart with timing when they do scam calls. Say, for example, someone wanted to call my parents and say they're me. And they wait until I'm on a flight. So if my parents get a call from me, they can't actually get a hold of me because my phone is off and that's actually like a real life thing. I've talked to many people in this industry saying that that has ramped up. So there's a lot of weird risks that you don't realize that come with it.
