Kukatpally police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly stealing gold rings from prominent jewellery stores by swapping them with imitation pieces.
The accused, identified as Merugu Sagar from Ameenpur in Sangareddy district, was nabbed following an investigation into thefts reported at major jewellery outlets, including CMR and Malabar Gold, earlier this year.
Clever Theft Modus Operandi:
According to police, the incidents occurred on January 23 and February 2. The accused would pose as a customer and ask to see gold rings. While the staff were distracted, he allegedly replaced the original rings with fake rolled-gold imitations concealed in his shirt pocket and left the store unnoticed.
Police Investigation:
Cases were registered at Kukatpally police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with a similar case also filed at Punjagutta police station.
Using CCTV footage and technical evidence, police tracked down and arrested the accused.
Recovery and Probe:
Officials recovered three stolen gold rings weighing around 32 grams from his possession. Further investigation is underway to check if he was involved in more such incidents.
