On the highway between Darwin and Katherine, there are only a couple of places to stop for a meal or an overnight stay. One is the historic town of Pine Creek. The gold rush town has joined a growing list of communities who no longer have a 24/7 police presence and rely on officers from neighboring areas to respond to emergencies. Residents say a shrinking police presence is already having an impact.
