A subsequent series of smaller waves unveiled a crucial detail about the actual occurrence of the earthquake. By utilizing the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, scientists were able to observe nuances that traditional deep-ocean sensors had overlooked.
These concealed waves indicated that the fault rupture occurred remarkably near the ocean trench, resulting in shorter waves that bore a distinct mark of the earthquake's true origin. This finding could enhance scientists' ability to predict tsunamis and deepen their understanding of how these catastrophic waves are generated.
