France has recently announced that it will increase its nuclear weapons for the first time in many decades. This decision was made by French President Emmanuel Macron as part of a new defense strategy.
The plan includes increasing the number of nuclear warheads, although the exact number has not been made public. France has also said it will stop revealing the size of its nuclear stockpile to keep its strategy more secret and unpredictable.
Another important part of this policy is stronger cooperation with European countries. France may allow its nuclear-capable aircraft to be deployed temporarily in allied countries and will involve partners like Germany and Poland in nuclear-related exercises. However, control over nuclear weapons will remain only with France.
The main reason behind this move is growing global tension. Factors like the Russia–Ukraine war, rising military power of China, and uncertainty about long-term U.S. support for Europe have pushed France to strengthen its nuclear deterrence.
This change is considered one of the biggest shifts in France’s nuclear policy since the Cold War. It shows that Europe is trying to become more independent in its defense and security matters.
