Smyle — Smyle 1970 (Canada, Psychedelic Rock)
A band from Burlington, Ontario. Active from 1967 to 1971. Originally called "The Smile," they played clubs in Toronto for several years until they signed a contract with the small Ruby label for a single release in January 1969. Columbia Records became interested in the band. After some reorganization (the drummer, whose name remained only as "Mel," left; one letter in the band's name was changed), the band released two 45s and an album of original songs under the new name, with the exception of covers of Chuck Berry and Joni Mitchell. Riding a wave of success, the musicians recorded two more singles and disbanded. Ron Demmans, who wrote most of the material, apparently moved to Nashville and took up songwriting and production. Bassist Peter Rihbany is still active, playing in the band "Back 11"... Upbeat, moderately heavy guitar rock with psychedelic elements.
