The state epidemiologist of South Carolina has reported several instances of measles encephalitis, resulting in brain swelling that leads to hearing impairment and other neurological issues, amid the state's outbreak of over 553 cases, the largest ever recorded in a single U.S. state. Nineteen individuals have been admitted to hospitals, and emergency immune globulin is being administered to pregnant women to avert measles-related miscarriages. Experts caution that the extent of the outbreak has been significantly underestimated.
