Europe Has Only 6 Weeks of Jet Fuel Left – IEA Warns

2026-04-17 7 Dailymotion

Europe is running out of jet fuel. The International Energy Agency warns that the continent has just six weeks of supplies left.

Why? The Strait of Hormuz – a critical route for Gulf exports – has been closed by Iran for over six weeks in response to US and Israeli attacks. Prices have skyrocketed, and experts say flight cancellations could begin as early as June.

Europe normally gets 75% of its jet fuel from the Middle East. Alternative imports from the US and Nigeria can replace only half of that. Even if the Strait reopens now, it would take five to six weeks to restore normal supply – meaning summer travel could be severely disrupted.

Major hubs like Heathrow may be prioritized, while smaller airports face shortages. The European Commission admits supply issues are likely soon. Airlines are already hurting – EasyJet reported £25m in extra fuel costs, and KLM is cancelling 160 flights.
