Surat: The Surat Police have cracked the shocking “Prasad Poisoning Case” that had sent shockwaves through the upscale Shaligram States society, revealing that the accused was the victim family’s next-door neighbour.
The आरोपी, identified as Ushaben Mahendrabhai Nakrani, allegedly confessed during interrogation to mixing a high dose of sleeping pills into boondi laddoos and leaving them at the doorstep of Goverdhanbhai Donda’s house on April 10, posing as a religious offering.
According to police, the act was premeditated and aimed at exploiting the family’s faith. Around 3:00 PM, Goverdhanbhai found a bag of laddoos hanging on his door and, assuming it to be prasad, brought it inside. He and his daughter-in-law, Kiran, consumed the sweets.
Within minutes, both began experiencing severe dizziness, nausea and collapsed. Goverdhanbhai’s condition turned critical, and he had to be put on ventilator support, while Kiran suffered intense weakness and disorientation.
The conspiracy came to light due to the alertness of the family’s daughter, Isha. Sensing something unusual, she broke open the remaining laddoos and found three to four intact tablets hidden inside each piece. She immediately informed the family and alerted the police, providing key evidence for investigation.
During the probe, it was revealed that Ushaben allegedly held a grudge against the Donda family. About eight months ago, her daughter had eloped for a love marriage, and she suspected that Kiran had helped her. Police believe this suspicion led to the planned act of revenge.
A case has been registered under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing hurt by means of poison.
The Donda family remains traumatised. “If we had eaten one more laddoo, the entire family could have been wiped out,” Kiran said. The family has urged authorities to ensure their safety and take strict action, even requesting that the accused be removed from the locality.
