Watch this clip where a brave woman carries out a tense rescue after a young monkey became trapped inside a locked holiday home with no clear way out.
Lindy Elmes from Ballito, South Africa, stepped in after the distressed animal got its tiny fingers stuck in a closed window. With no access to the house, a small open window below became the only lifeline. Acting quickly, Lindy positioned a ladder on uneven ground and carefully climbed up, despite the risk of it slipping.
She managed to reach the window latch and free the terrified monkey, which immediately ran off to safety once released. The young monkey, estimated to be over two years old, now has a strong chance of reuniting with its troop, with wildlife teams monitoring the situation closely.
Lindy said:
“A nerve-wracking rescue !!
"This was one of those calls that had our hearts in our throats.
"A young monkey somehow managed to get her tiny fingers trapped in a closed window of an unoccupied holiday home. The little one was terrified and we had no way of accessing the home.
"Thankfully, a small window just below had been left open. With quick thinking and a steady nerve, Lindy brought in a ladder and carefully approached from the outside. The ground was uneven and the ladder slipped, making everyone's adrenaline surge, including the monkey who was stressed by the approaching human!
"Lindy hopped onto the windowsill and managed to partially climb in, reach up, and release the latch.
"The moment the window opened and those little fingers were finally free this dear little monkey wasted no time disappearing to safety.
"We can only imagine how sore her fingertips must be, but we’re so relieved she’s out of harm’s way.
"Another reminder of how easily wildlife can get into trouble in our built environments… and how important it is to keep an eye out for them ?”
