Spain rescues 32 migrants off Canary Islands, Red Cross says
Spain’s maritime rescue service helped 32 migrants off the coast of Gran Canaria on Tuesday the Red Cross told Reuters. A first boat carrying 12 migrants arrived at the port of Arguineguin overnight, and Red Cross personnel gave them medical assistance, the charity said. Another boat carrying 20 migrants arrived on the island of Lanzarote on Tuesday, the Red Cross said. The arrivals coincide with the beginning of in‑person applications for a mass amnesty program for undocumented migrants. Foreign arrivals in Spain have risen to 1 million a year from around 300,000 a year over the past decade. Migrants have filled three of every four new jobs created since 2019 and have accounted for 47% of economic growth since 2022, according to think tank Funcas.
